Using -u gives a wrong answer:
$ mail -u $USER -H
No applicable messages
$ mail -H
>N   1 jidann...
Same for -e.

$ mail -e -u $USER --mailbox-type MAILDIR
mail: Invalid mailbox type: MAILDIR
Try `mail --help' or `mail --usage' for more information.

Well, they don't say what the valid --mailbox-types are. One must
guess again.

$ mail -e -u $USER --mailbox-type maildir
mail: Invalid mailbox type: maildir
Try `mail --help' or `mail --usage' for more information.

And
       The complete GNU mailutils manual is not available in Debian
       systems due to licensing reasons. You can find this manual
       online in the GNU mailutils webpage:
       http://www.gnu.org/software/mailutils/manual/index.html.
But I am offline. So must just guess again.

$ mail -e -u $USER --mailbox-type Maildir
Cannot create mailbox for jidanni: No registered handler

OK, seems I guessed right, but what's this about creating a mailbox?!

OK, we go online and choose
http://www.gnu.org/software/mailutils/manual/mailutils-info.tar.gz
ERROR 404: Not Found

and http://www.gnu.org/software/mailutils/manual/mailutils.html
doesn't mention --mailbox-type.

$ mail -V
mail (GNU Mailutils 1.2)
