Most of GNU make's builtin rules are implemented internally as suffix rules, for just this reason, but some of them can't be (because suffixes are less powerful than patterns). If you want to get rid of those you'll need to either (a) pass -r to your make invocation, or (b) remove them by hand in your makefile (see the GNU make manual for how to cancel pattern rules: you can use "make -p" to get a complete listing of the rules make knows about). -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul D.
