That sounds like a bug in the documentation you're reading rather than a
bug in make.

i am installing a software on debian. To install this software correctly
"make" must run as follows
 
make --with-126
 
But problem is "make" is  not supporting the switch "--with-126". Then i
installed gnu make 3.81 but problem is still there. Can you help
