I'm not sure what you mean by _by comparison to the same rule without ".WAIT"_ Make only ever builds a given target one time, at most, per invocation of make regardless of how many times it appears in the makefile. That is mandated by POSIX and has been true since make was invented back in the 1970's. Are you saying that if you have this makefile: all: step1 pause step2 pause step3 step%: ; echo "Step $*" pause: ; @read -p "Press enter to continue." dummy (without .WAIT) it DOES run the pause target and ask to press enter more than one time? Because I don't believe you :).
