You can always shrink all types of ext2/3 partitions with resize2fs from
the e2fsprogs package.

You can only resize filesystems that way (not a partition). If I did need a resize (shrink, for example), I would more than likely use parted, so that I could change the size of an adjoning partition.
My main problem though is I can't use parted for resize or copy on a partition with an fedora core5 install even though partition can be used before the install and even though the install did NOT format the filesystem. This means there must be a tool that can set the incompatabe filesystem "feature(s)" (possibly the "sparse_super and/or filetype" feature of mke2fs) without using mke2fs. I need to know the name of the tool that can reset these features without formating.
