even with commands only accessing the unit reading only: parted /dev/sda unit s print The device is partitioned. fdisk prints: r...@sysresccd /root % fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x3bf9e81b Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 7 56196 83 Linux /dev/sda2 * 8 10319 82831140 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 10320 30401 161308665 f Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda5 10320 15673 43005942 83 Linux /dev/sda6 15674 15934 2096451 82 Linux swap /dev/sda7 15935 24289 67111537+ b W95 FAT32 /dev/sda8 24290 30401 49094608+ 83 Linux The same, expert mode: Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 30401 cylinders Nr AF Hd Sec Cyl Hd Sec Cyl Start Size ID 1 00 1 1 0 254 63 6 63 112392 83 2 80 0 1 7 254 63 1023 112455 165662280 07 3 00 254 63 1023 254 63 1023 165774735 322617330 0f 4 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 00 5 00 254 63 1023 254 63 1023 126 86011884 83 6 00 254 63 1023 254 63 1023 86012072 4192902 82 7 00 254 63 1023 254 63 1023 4192965 134223075 0b 8 00 254 63 1023 254 63 1023 63 98189217 83 cfdisk refuses to start: FATAL ERROR: Bad logical partition 6: enlarged logical partitions overlap Press any key to exit cfdisk Other tools (Windows-based, acronis disk-director) do not see any problem with partitions on this disk.
