The problem reported below was caused by the presence of a USB thumb drive on
one of the USB ports.
When I removed the thumb drive, the Parted software executed without problem.
The problem repeated when I was running updates from the repository. The USB
thumb drive was present on a USB port and parts of the update failed for the
reason below. Removal of the thumb drive again resolved the problem.
