And to answer your second question, simply process the data through --use-encrypt-program first, then through --use-compress-program. When compression is used, it makes sense to not allow multi volume tape spanning.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Could you explain that exception in
a bit more detail?  Also, what should happen if --use-encrypt-program
and --use-compress-program are both specified?
