I was able to resolve the issue. I was looking for the exit status of the tar command so I could send email about success or fail. After reviewing gnu tar docs I saw that I should have been checking for ext stat 2 for tar failure, 1 was some files may be corrupt and 0 was total success. I was only checking for status of 0 and naything else to me was a failed tar. Sorryy to have "bugged" you guys.

Perhaps you can resend to bug-tar, explaining the difference?
