The listing format. The NetBSD mtree format (the variant that puts the full pathname as the first element of each line) is machine-readable and relatively easy to extend, so that would be another candidate. (Of course, I'm partial to that approach since bsdtar already implements it. ;-) It also has the advantage of using one line per file, which makes it much easier to filter/edit with tools like grep and sed.
