truss is the name used in a techical paper from AT&T from ~1984. trace is the first implementation of the idea in SunOS-4.0 (1987) strace is an attempt to reimplement trace from SunOS-4.0 in 1989, unfortunately strace is the name of an older streams tracer. With SVr4 (1989/1990), trace from SunOS was renamed to truss on request of AT&T. strace was later ported to Linux....
