Sorry, I'm lost. Your earlier message said you wanted the trailing slash; now you say you don't want it. I imagine that you're saying you want trailing slash for tar cf and you don't want it for tar xf, or vice versa, or something like that, but unfortunately I'm not really following exactly what you're asking for.
