No reason for apologies.... For someone familiar with the tar archive format, it takes less than 30 seconds to understand what's happening (even though the "hdump -a" output would make it easier to see the problem). BTW: Your previous assumption that there was a change in the gtar archive format could be proven from the output you sent.
