Hmm, it read the files for the case that I tried. Perhaps it reads sometimes and not others. Either way, it appears that I was wrong and this is not an entirely theoretical discussion; also, from other's comments it appears that some practical uses run faster due to gtar's optimizations, which sounds like a good thing.
