Sorry, forgot to mention that I tried 1.28, too. That dies on a different error, much earlier in configure, the rm-without-filenames-should-not-exit-with-failure, reported bug#22074: (unixware 7.1.4 rm command) -- There is this special biologist word we use for 'stable'.
