the 1.29 testsuite fails exactly because your (file)system has troubles with
symlinks (upgrade to 1.29 will most probably won't help).
I can't tell why this does not work for you:
mkdir dst1
ln -s target1 dst1/file1
echo target1 >dst1/target1
