I just built texinfo-4.3 (on ix86-linux-gnu with gcc-2.95.3) and saw
that there are a lots of gcc warnings.
Were you using -Wall? I did not get any warnings with the default options.
I don't think any of the string constants actually get written to, at
least I've never gotten a bug report about it.
Anyway, I completely agree about using const and prototypes. I just
hadn't wanted to make that big of a change to the sources while I was
(primarily) in bug-fixing mode.
Therefore, I would like to suggest the attached patch.
