See my previous email, I checked again with catting the logs to standard output, and none of the MikTeX engines does the \openout tracing job. So using -recorder is what I had in mind. I can propose a patch to do that if you don't want to do it yourself. I would like do it conservatively so that both -recorder or not -recorder can be used according to -recorder availability and context: some new texi2dvi cmd line argument, or some new variable TEX2DVI_USE_RECORDER. I do not like losing the possibility to force use of .log instead if .fls, because this makes hard to test the script.
