According to the table on page 6 in the current microtype package,
XeTeX *does* support character protrusion!  Karl, can you please add
that to your patch?  Having a uniform behaviour for all major TeX
engines would be tremendously helpful.

It is, definitely!  The longer the keywords like @code{\FooBarBaz},
the better it is if TeX has more possibilities to break a line.

Actually, given that protrusion is available for all TeX engines, I
suggest to have it *on* be default.
