Wow, well done, reducing it to such a nice tidy little test case! I'm sure you've also realized by now that I lied about Ubuntu (Ubuntu 22.10 currently comes with only version 6.8; I was actually running the 7.0 version that I got directly from the GNU) -- but in fact the same bug afflicts 6.8 as well.
