First, could you confirm which version of Texinfo you got these results
with.

I tested with Texinfo 7.1, ran configure with the same configure line
as you, then ran "make distclean".

I use TeXinfo 7.1. Sorry, my statements were not completely correct. I wasn't aware that the Debian clean tools also impact upstream files. I'll send an corrected list later.
