it is not actually that easy to avoid a hard dependency on Devel::Peek,
since loading it in an eval does not work.  I'll investigate more,
a possibility could be to reimplement the Devel::Peek::SvREFCNT function
used from Devel::Peek as it should be a very simple wrapper around the
SvREFCNT C function.
