sort bug

Greetings!

I'm using the sort utility in CygWin on Win2000 as follows:

sort -k 4 test.txt

Instead of sorting on the 4th field, it says, "Input file specified two
times."

Is there a fix for this?  Am I using this incorrectly?  Thanks!
