the old automake files were outdated in some areas, so I think it's better to
fix these than to go back to an old version... Will look into this bug on the
weekend.
I didn't mean to revert to the 4.2.7 automake. I meant we should
consider using the old LIBS, or if we can correctly figure out which
ones to use for each platform, then streamline them that way.
