What is in those files that you want XBoard to read?
Chances are that they should be considered deprecated,
and their function has been taen over by ~/.xboardrc .
Athough true X-options (i.e. not defined in xboard.c) should
still be handled by the X-option parser from ~/.Xresources,
if that is what X usualy does.

This is configurable, btw: the XBoard-specific user settings can
be defined to reside in any file, specified in the system-wide
settings file.
