To start XBoard in a specific mode, you can use

xboard -initialMode MachineWhite

(or whatever other mode you want to start it in).

Ermm... Scratch that last paragraph. I was trying to get XBoard to start in
'Machine *White*' mode (since it starts in 'Machine Black' mode when I call it
"normally" i.e. with -fcp).
