Guys, this is a Heisenbug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisenbug).
All my options of doing any research on this are now exhausted. Last night, I
used GTA02 #60 to do some modem-stress-tests -- hammering it with commands on
multiple virtual channels while being registered to the network -- and guess
what... over 12 hours there has not been a _single_ +CREG: 0.
And yes, this is the same phone, same SIM card, same location, same
initsequence, same cell tower, same everything.
Now we can only pray that it does not occur too often in the field.
The only remaining scientific attempt to find out what is going on would be
someone scrutinizing this by using the GSM low-level debug and GNU radio.
Until then this is my last comment on this bug.

Hi,
this was very quick!
Just for the records:
There was no suspicious output in dmesg.
Prepending s: before the key has no effect.
Doing ifconfig eth0 down, then iwconfig eth0 key blabla works nicely.
Checking again when a new image with the proposed fix comes out.
(I think the bug's status can be changed to something else :) )

Summary: ar6000: switching wifi modes does not work
Product: OpenMoko
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: kernel
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CC: [email protected]
Hi,
first off: Wifi in ad-hoc and client mode works. However switching the modes
does not work correctly. I got these problems with the kernel from package
1:2.6.24+git20080511-r0 .
To reproduce the problem try out the following:
- set up an ad-hoc station with another computer
- bring the neo's wifi card into a sane default state:
ifconfig eth0 down
iwconfig eth0 essid off mode managed
- set the essid of your ad-hoc station, e.g.
iwconfig eth0 essid olsr.freifunk.net
(on occassion, running 'iwconfig eth0' at this point will hang. ctrl-c helps.)
- switch to ad-hoc mode: iwconfig eth0 mode ad-hoc
- run iwconfig eth0 and realize that the card has not associated with the
existing station (no BSSID)
To fix the issue at this point one currently needs to run:
iwconfig eth0 essid off
iwconfig eth0 essid olsr.freifunk.net

[This e-mail has been automatically generated.]
You have one or more bugs assigned to you in the Bugzilla
bugsystem (http://bugzilla.openmoko.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/) that require
attention.
All of these bugs are in the NEW state, and have not been touched
in 7 days or more. You need to take a look at them, and
decide on an initial action.
Generally, this means one of three things:
(1) You decide this bug is really quick to deal with (like, it's INVALID),
and so you get rid of it immediately.
(2) You decide the bug doesn't belong to you, and you reassign it to someone
else. (Hint: if you don't know who to reassign it to, make sure that
the Component field seems reasonable, and then use the "Reassign bug to
owner of selected component" option.)
(3) You decide the bug belongs to you, but you can't solve it this moment.
Just use the "Accept bug" command.
To get a list of all NEW bugs, you can use this URL (bookmark it if you like!):
http://bugzilla.openmoko.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?bug_status=NEW&[EMAIL
PROTECTED]
Or, you can use the general query page, at
http://bugzilla.openmoko.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/query.cgi.
Appended below are the individual URLs to get to all of your NEW bugs that
haven't been touched for a week or more.
You will get this message once a day until you've dealt with these bugs!
