This bug is still in my fresh 2008.8 aug. 26th install. Was already
 described in wiki for 2007.2.
 Browsing http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/Om2008.8/om-gta02/
manually shows there are no .sig indeed.
I searched the trac and was surprised that there is no ticket for this.

It seems that assassin shows only the first ~17 characters in a package
name. And the package naming pattern uses a left to right hierarchy, so in
category Communication, for example, I see "qtopia-phone-x11-" twice.
There are five in category "Miscellanous".
Also lots of packages are "openmoko-somethin".

There are many possible fixes. My rough preferences in decreasing order
 would be:
smaller font, finger scrolling, automatic scrolling, shorter tags in
package name, reverse the package naming scheme

Some package names are less explicit than others.
 gpe-scap is the worse, but diversity-nav, diversity-wifi and om-locations
are unclear too. Outright original applications names are okay, altough
some are (tango-gps) are less cryptic than others (orrery, midori...) .

Prefixes seem inconsistent: I find the shorter form better. om-*, moko-*,
 openmoko-***.

openmoko-***2. The application name seems to include a version number.
That potentially (and actually) contradicts the major revision number.
It's unpolished to have such a semantic (if not technical) incoherence.

Sorry this is 3 bugs in one ! Let me know if you want 3 tickets instead.

Comment(by ChristW):

I also have problems associating with my AP at home. I have a stock WRT54G
ver 7 with no firmware updates (there aren't any available).

Running wpa_supplicant in debug mode tells me that associating with the AP
fails because of a timeout. I'll re-run the wpa_supplicant command at home
 and attach the results.

Comment:

i've added this to the TODO file in illume's svn tree. so mayaswell close
this (it's more likely to get done if in that file than here as i know i
am much more liable to just bring up the file for my todo list than go
search through trac for tickets!) :) so i'll resolve as "community" as
it's in illume's e.org svn source tree waiting to getting around to....
 being done :)

Comment(by olberger):

This is one of the minor annoyances that need to be fixed I think.

Although not a problem per se, it tends to induce a bad habit from the
user : not reading error messages anymore.

I was punished yesterday by such bad habbit, when I ignored "unable to
download packages.gz" messages, as my brain expected "unable to download
packages.sig" and was confused by the similarity.

Maybe if the messages were different it would be less confusing.

Or maybe adding the .sig in the repo wouldn't be that difficult ?

Comment:

The Openmoko designers just wanted to have their "clean" default design
and everything moved to packages (including the wrench). One of these
designers created the illume-config package himself.

Is there no way to bring back the flexibility of moving this wrench to a
package ? Why is that ?
