kbdcontrol did fix it. Whats actually wrong with the code? Are you going to write up a permanent fix?

Following may solve you problem:

1) if you have another PC that can ssh login into the problem box, try
running following command:
kbdcontrol -k /dev/kbd1 < /dev/ttyv0
And try whether the you keyboard works after that

if 1) does not work
2) remove the "device atkbdc" and "device atkbd" from your kernel config file
