(feature request) SASL support in Sendmail

I am trying to use AuthMechanisms with Sendmail and when applying the new 
config, I get:

Warning: Option: AuthMechanisms requires SASL support (-DSASL)
I need to auth to a smarthost (plaintext). Could this be added to the 
Sendmail options, or am I better off with another MTA for now?
