Thanks for the hint.

How about putting a link to
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/configuring.html#syntax in the htaccess file ?
(after all we are no longer in the paper world of sequential reading, but
hypertext and search engines are typically used today, so a user may just see
the htaccess file, but not all the rest of the documentation.)

As for the other two, what do you mean with "not really recommended"? 
I would guess it is good practice to put such files under version control and
thus  a comment with at least the version control tag would be recommended too?
Does it work or will it break something? I.e. s the Group file a configuration
file as per 
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/configuring.html where 
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/configuring.html#syntax applies or not?
