Can you try without SSL on the reverse proxy. This would give us more
information about the packet flow times and would rule out that this the
fault of mod_ssl.
Please also sent the proxy configuration and your TimeOut settting

This is a Windows specific error message. What error messages shows up if you
use the Ubuntu Apache as reverse proxy?
