The point is that graceful restart won't kill established connections, be they websocket or whatever, that's its purpose. How could httpd know that an establiched connection should be killed because it's a heartbeat (or so) versus business data? Inactive/idle connections should be handled by appropriate timeouts. As Eric said in in comment 5, how does lowering the Timeout and ProxyTimeout (or ProxyPass parameter timeout=) help?
