The system had:

 - hda1 ext3
 - hda2 swap
 - hda3 lvm

ubiquity couldn't run step 5, it tried to find the partitions but it was not 
able.

trying 

# kdesu qtparted 

the gui didn't launch with no errors , just an exit.

to fix it:

# mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda3

then it was possible to install the system clicking on the desktop icon
