Are you using a fixed IP configuration or DHCP to get an address? Also,
which speed is your link?

I have a similar PowerBook6,8 system, and have noticed it takes a
significant while (i.e. 10 seconds or more) after the interface is
brought up, for a link to be obtained. I have not noticed loss of link,
though (at 100baseTX FD), but I have not used this system in a while...
maybe it's time for more investigation.
