If it's good when you hard boot, then maybe an rc.* script is causing

I copied rc.conf as rc.conf.local and set all services except
sshd to NO. It did not help.

I suspect it may be related to serial console because
when I attach USB keyboard before boot I lose the console
output as soon as I should get the logon prompt.
There are PROM settings for this combination which I have
to investigate. I have only XVR-2500 display cards which are
not supported and therefore I am stuck. To be continued...

Hello,

This happens with v5.2, v5.3 and snapshot 26/May/2013:

then the machine freezes; at the middle of the sentence

If I switch of the machine from the power button the fsck will
complain about inconsistencies and fix them. For some reason
the fsck does not freeze at this time and machine boots up
to the logon prompt.

I have 4 disks and all first partitions in them start at offset 0
(not at offset 63). It does not help whether I have 1 or
4 disks in bays.

At one instance I got continuous printout saying

"ohci2: xxx scheduling overruns"

but have not been able to repeat it.
