You could figure out by playing a long file. It happens as soon as I start playing a file. 'aucat -i audio.wav' and 'flac123 audio.flac' result in one "audio0: play interrupt but not playing" message, but 'mpg123 audio.mp3' results in 3 copies of the message. All three programs play without further issues after that (but only if sndiod is running).
