Aha, there it is. The tablet tries to use the power save mode all the
time and loses the connection instantly. Years ago, I installed some
small application ("WIFI High Performance Widget") that prevents
Android from doing so, was the only method I could find for Android 4.
It works, but occasionally I see notification messages about the app
switching on and off for whatever reason. So, now I think it is a
possible race condition - how fast the app can disable power save mode
vs the ath driver reacting to it. Some subtle change must have altered
the previous balance. Not an OpenBSD problem. I'll do more testing and
can always stick with 6.1 for another year or two until that tablet
finally dies.
