Hi all,

this reads like the problem I've been having since about mid-July, also
on -current (usually updating once a week): system becoming completely
unresponsive, only way out is shutdown via power button.
I can confirm that it seems like an X issue:
For me the crash usually happens directly after login (via xenodm) or
during significant changes to the display (attaching/detaching secondary
screen).
This morning I had to try booting about 15 times before I finally had a
working graphical session. This was by far the worst time yet. Before
it happened sporadically and never multiple times in a row.

When booting again after such a crash there is a new executable in /:

$ file INS@LBbGHqSOWP
INS@LBbGHqSOWP: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1

The size is equivalent to /bsd and the letters after the INS@ are
different each time. I'm guessing it's the kernel booted during the
crash? If these files are of any interest to you I'm happy to send them
to you off-list (probably unnecessary but I want to make sure to not
publicly leak any data I shouldn't - especially if I'm wrong and they are
not kernel).

Also: https://marc.info/?t=162851777600002 seems to me like it might be
the same problem. Apologies if that assumption is incorrect.

If there is anything I can send you otherwise (configs, logs, whatever)
please let me know. I would very much like to see this getting fixed
because it starts to go from minor annoyance to unusable system and the
thought of going back into linuxland fills me with existential terror.
So I'm also willing to test just about anything you can come with.

Best regards,
Alexander

I have had similar for months on end and never been able to get more
information. Usually it stopped doing our after a while and sometimes
started again later. Currently it's not happening for me and I hope it
stays that way!

There is a chance you might get something from a kernel with WITNESS,
however equally that might hide the problem.

If you use hw.perfpolicy=auto, try disabling that.
