My usage of the link1-switch was years ago, as we started with DSL in Germany, but the telephone was still analog, so there was (for security reasons) no need to stay online, if nobody used it. The router closed the connection if no data flow for a few minutes and reopened it on demand.
Today we have VoIP, so the use of the link1 seems to be obsolete. But I think, it's good to have a choice.
