Correct. It is set in corba/make/common/shared/Defs-utils.gmk but never used. This is probably an artifact of copying Defs-utils.gmk from the jdk repo.
The only other place in corba using awk is in make/common/shared/Platform.gmk, and that section is BSD specific.
