Hiya David ,

I was aware of that, but due to circumstances beyond our control, the use
of down-level autotools is (currently) enforced - but at least I now have a
handle on at least one of the reasons for the minmum autoconf level - FWIW,
I did find this (
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnulib/2014-01/msg00034.html) which
provides both a problem description and a posited work-around.
