Generally speaking, being able to use the latest features is important because they typically reduce cost of both development (short term) & maintenance (long term).

For a non-obvious example, having to support two ways of doing something because one way was deprecated and removed, but one is stuck with some old baseline where it still wasn't adds non-trivial cost to design, decision making, maintenance, etc.
