Yes maybe they need better names if the short debug utils have clashed with 
something else in the past, maybe it was a clash with some native test.
Maybe JVM_dbg_pp, JVM_dbg_blob, etc..?  (We already have dbg_is_safe). I don't 
see it spelled out exactly what the clash was.

The clash was simply that the agent had a "debug" function and it instead called the JVM's "debug" function (the issue was JDK-8326993 but it is not public simply due to dealing with an internal test).

Seems to me though we have accidentally(?) exposed functions in libjvm that are not intended to be exported. The main exported functions we used to define via the map files, as I recall, were the JVM_xxx and JNI_xxx functions that form the two exported API's of the JVM. Granted there are some exceptions eg the jio_ functions.
