Never got an answer but found a workaround myself :-)
I've changed the configuration from "Maven 3 (latest)" to "Maven 3.0.5" and now
everythings works fine.

Switching away from "Maven 3 (latest)" to maven-3.1.1 works, but -
caution! - there seems to be a propagation delay on the configuration
change. I saw an svn poll log with the error a few minutes after I'd
changed the maven setting; it has now started working.

Maven is set to "maven-3.1.1" and that stack trace is post resetting the
maven version. It was set as "Maven 3 (latest)" giving the same message.
