This is a useful analysis of what it will cost
providers in time and money to implement HIPAA. The discussion about Myth
2, "Vendors can deliver HIPAA compliance to providers via
software," is especially disturbing for the small provider.
Small providers are already overwhelmed by the daily operating
requirements placed on their shoulders by managed care and other
insurers. When are they going to have time to learn to intelligently
quiz the vendors to see who can and cannot deliver? This situation is a
bonanza for consultants but, again, when will the providers have time to learn
how to assess the consultants before they spend a lot of money on a questionable
service?
