Facts about house dust mites & allergies: • The British Allergy Foundation has described asthma as ‘the most common chronic childhood medical condition.’ As yet, there is no cure for asthma. • Children suffer the most from allergies. And when they are exposed to allergens in their earlier years, the risk of developing allergies increases manifold. • House dust mites are capable of living in mattresses, carpets, upholstery and soft toys, and in any place where the following conditions exist: i) Humidity between 60% to 90% ii) Temperature between 25 ºC to 40 ºC iii) Availability of food such as human body skin flakes (we shed around 0.5kg per year) • In ideal conditions, house dust mites live for 3-4 months with females laying 25 to 50 eggs, thereby introducing a new generation every three weeks. • Each house dust mite produces around 20 droppings per day. Each dropping holds around 10-12 sub-pellets that are about 2-10 micron in size. These sub-pellets contain the house dust mite’s leftover enzymes, which cause allergies upon inhalation.
