I do not know why Arno does this, but on my system (ARM Kirkwood, linux-2.6.36, ubifs) I see messages "UBIFS: recovery needed" when doing a reboot without manually mounting the filesystem(s) read-only before. So there seem to be setups where the normal reboot does not force a sane filesystem state on all attached filesystems, although unfortunately I did not yet have time to figure out what exactly is happening there.
