Dear Ramjee,

You have got the caterpillar of  COMMON CASTOR butterfly. Yes rear it in a
large  bottle and enjoy. Your closeup photography is excellent. Location though
important, you need to record the species of the plant that a caterpillar was
feeding on - you might stumble upon a new record!!!
cheers!
Isaac

Dear Friends,

Vanakkam! Greetings from Chennai.

This morning (Sunday, 29 November 2009) I had a chance
to visit Pallikaranai a wetland in the city.

I got to see this bright
greenish caterpillar, with a characteristic human-skull like face (inset Image).

Would
like to learn the id of this.

Location: 12. 57 N & 80.13
E (Google map)

Also, am planning to raise it in a bottle to get more images and watch the pupa
turn into butterfly. would like to learn the tips to
do the same (apart from bringing fresh leaves of the host plant every morning…
:~)

Should
it be kept near a window, shade, etc., etc., Will upload more pics and keep you
updated on the progress.

Thank
you.

Regards,
