a quick note since i am traveling: various Neptis
(Sailers) are often named to species level from
pictures of one wing surface on our group. i
should point out that there are nearly a dozen
species in the nata-soma-clinia group and in the
ananta group that can't be distinguished reliably
without dissecting male genitalia. even to begin
to assign species to species groups, you need
pictures of upper and undersides. so everyone, be
cautious while trying to ID Neptis. it's not as
easy a group as indian pictorial guides would
lead you to believe. if you are using any of the
popular field guides, confidence in
identifications comes from lack of comprehensive
coverage of species. besides, virtually all the
books on indian butterflies are confused about
the identities and names of various species from
the Neptis nata-soma-clinia group. this stems
from a historical taxonomic confusion, which has
been largely sorted out now. however, authors of
recent books on indian butterflies have a
tendency to copy information from older books
without understanding and without acknowledging
(as opposed to taking information from up to date
taxonomic/systematic literature, which is not
always in the form of books). so most of the
older taxonomic confusion has simply been copied
in these newer books. the new pictorial guides
are good for visual reference, but take the
information in these books with a pinch of salt.

It does look like "Neptis clinia"
Attaching an image of sailers.
I just have all the sailers in one big frame and go through Blyth.
Its easy to eliminate many of the sailers right away, with this method.
